Curiosity: one of the most important practices that encourages healing
One of the most important practices that encourages healing is engaging in curiosity.
Becoming curious about something is the first step of your healing journey after you set up the foundation of safety.
To be curious it means that you are open to take in your surroundings, to experience wonder, to explore the world around you and become aware of details that take place in the present moment.
This activity engages a part of your Autonomic Nervous System which is called the Social Engagement System or Ventral Vagal Complex, where present, safety and connection reside.
When you experience trauma your access to your Social Engagement System is disrupted and your ability to feel at ease is being compromised and challenged with trauma responses or symptoms such as worry, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, freeze, collapse, fight or flight and pain.
Engaging in curiosity is a very important element and the first step once you created a foundation of safety. This can restore the Social Engagement System while practicing and applying Nervous System Regulation.
You can do this by firstly becoming curious for the little and accessible things that exist around you. You can use your senses to see, touch, smell, hear, taste and get curious about things like:
The line of the horizon above the sea water,
The leaves moving with the wind,
The sound of a soft melody,
The warmth of a cup of tea in your palm,
The presence of a big tree in nature,
The tone of the voice of your loved one,
The smile of someone who passes by,
The smell of a flower you walk by,
The taste of a juicy fruit in the summertime
This daily practice of becoming curious about the little things, can help you build and tone your Ventral Vagal muscle so that your Nervous System can experience moments of ease outside of the impressions of threat. The more you practice this on a regular basis the more you train your Nervous System to feel safe.
I love you.
And remember,
Everything you seek, lies within your Self.
Heart to Heart,
Christina
