Benefits of Mum & Baby Yoga
Mum & Baby postnatal yoga class can really help mothers on the physical, mental and emotional level. Through movement, breath and relaxation allows the mother to reconnect with their body after pregnancy and birth while bringing several benefits to their body, mind and emotional domain. These yoga classes help to start strengthening the mother's core muscles in a gentle way as well as the lower back and the pelvic floor. Parallel to that the classes are designed in a specific way where the mother and the baby can move along together or mothers can include their babies into the practice wherever possible. The yoga postures and sequences are designed so that the babies are entertained, or they are hold as part of the yoga itself. These classes are designed to nurture new mothers and provide a safe environment for them to heal, nurture and reconnect with their bodies, while giving them ways to enjoy motherhood and bond with their babies, to meet and connect with other mothers and so much more.
These are some of the benefits of attending a mum & baby postnatal yoga class:
It eases tightness, tension, aches and niggles in the post natal body
It helps build up strength and stamina in the body
It provides time to rest and relax
It starts to strengthen the deep abdominal muscles to ‘close the body’ after birth. Without any high intensity exercise that can actually hinder the postnatal recovery
It relieves stiffness in the shoulders, neck and upper back
It helps to strengthens pelvic floor muscles
It strengthens abdominal and back muscles for core strength
It helps to expand your breathing
It maintains flexibility in your body
It helps you feel a sense of reclaiming your body
It uplifts energy levels
It calms the mind
It creates bonding between mother and baby
It gives confident to the mother as she takes care of her baby and herself
It creates positivity around your postnatal body
It builds trust between mother and baby
It provides a creative time between mother and baby
It gives you relaxed time to connect with and chat to other new mothers
It connects you with other mothers in a non judgemental and supportive environment
Many women worry that their baby will be too noisy, cry, need to feed, poo, etc. All the above will happen and this is totally fine. This is a process of learning to be with our baby and allowing ourselves to make the passage into parenthood. No matter what the situation is and what the need of our baby might be during the class, this is an opportunity to learn to flow through this process and make the right adjustments for our self in order to continue receiving benefits from this practice and eventually continue having a self-care routine.
Mothers should always check with their GP or midwife when it is appropriate to start attending a postnatal Mum & Baby yoga class. I usually advise after your 6 week check, maybe a little longer for a caesarean birth and of course when it feels right for you.
